I Won a Chili Contest!

How cool is this? I have never entered one before and I won! It was at work and there were 12 people in it, about 70 people work in our branch.

This was last week one day before The Plague. Good thing HR had "H1N1 Precautions" in place before the contest!

So here's the recipe ...I called it "The Green Mile" (but I didn't win best name, that one went to "Burns Both Ways.")

1 lb ground pork
2 (4 inch) fresh jalapenos, including seeds
2 cloves garlic, pressed or smashed
1 medium onion, quartered
1 3/4 c chicken broth
3 T vegetable oil
1/2 t ground cumin
1/4 t salt
1/8 t curry powder
15 oz can white hominy
1/2 c fresh cilantro, chopped
Pumpkin seeds, shelled, roasted
Crumbled cheese (goat's or sheep's is best)

Crumble and brown the pork in a pan.

Puree jalapeno, garlic, and onion with about a 1/2 cup of the chicken broth.
Heat vegetable oil in stock pot on med-high heat and then add puree, cumin, curry powder and salt. Simmer 10 minutes, stirring frequently cooking down to evaporate most of the liquid to make it thicker.

Drain and thoroughly rinse hominy.

Add hominy, pork, cilantro and remaining chicken broth and simmer another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

The GREAT thing about this recipe is that it is very inexpensive to make. The whole thing is about $5-7 total, not includeing seeds or cheese. So, when I triped the recipe for work, it was about $15. This is something I can do. :) It is really hot, I tried to tone the heat down but it just wasnt' the same.

If you try it, enjoy! :)
