He is NOT A DOG!

After returning from Montana, I packed my bags and went to visit a friend who has a cabin in the NW Angle Inlet, in Minnesota. For those of you whom have never heard of this place, this is a little piece of land in Canada that belongs to Minnesota. I’m not sure how it all came about – something to do with a plotting mistake that couldn’t be reversed.

I never even knew it existed. So here it is on the map (it is the lavendar shaded area):
Coming from Minnesota, we have to drive through Canada to get there.

Anywho, back to my story.

So I was driving along and up ahead I saw a horse grazing in the ditch. So I slowed way down and started trying to figure out what farm the horse might belong to so I could go and tell them it was out.
As I got closer, I realized it was “out” but it was tied to a fence post on a really long line.
No Joke. This has got to be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen someone do. I couldn’t help but take photos. When I left on Sunday, the horse had been moved down and tied to another part of the fence to graze there.

What a hazard!!! As if the horse can’t break away and get into traffic. Not to mention the damage a rope can do to a horse. Not only is this negligent management of livestock – because they aren’t securing it off the road, it’s dangerous for the horse.

No humans in site, I kept driving. If I can help it I don’t pick fights with people, especially in foreign countries. Minding my own business, one day at a time.

If the horse had actually been loose, I would have tried to notify the owner (or at least the neighbor) but I would not have tried to catch the horse. Unless there was already an accident or an immediate danger to a person, I do not make it my business to mess with other people’s animals unless paid to do so.

The liability is too great. The chances of spooking the animal into traffic and causing an accident are very real. If that’s going to happen, let the owner do it.

The horse looks healthy and it seemed quite happy - in all actuality, the horse looked saintly-a very kind seeming animal. I just hope these people don’t learn the hard way that this is not a good idea to do with a horse.
